My Washington Escape

Issue No. 21

Waterfalls, Family, & Cold Air

There’s something about Washington in the winter—the rain, the mist, the way the trees look like they’re breathing. In February, I went on a trip to Vancouver with my little sister, and even though it was short, it filled my heart in all the ways I didn’t know I needed.

We stayed at our aunt’s house, tucked into that classic Pacific Northwest landscape: pine trees, moss-covered everything, fog rolling over the hills. It’s the same place we used to visit in the summer as kids—except now, we’re adults, sharing memories, creating new ones, and still getting inspired by the quiet magic of it all.

The Vibe:

Family, nature, good food, freezing hikes, and that “just breathe it all in” energy.

Highlights From the Trip:

1. Spirit Falls Hike

Our aunt took us to her favorite waterfall, and now it’s mine too. Spirit Falls is hidden deep in the Washington forest—mossy rocks, roaring icy water, and this surreal turquoise tone that felt like a dream. We hiked in the rain and watched kayakers literally launch themselves off the waterfall. It even started snowing on our hike back! By the end of it, we were practically climbing our way out of the forest.

2. Food That Felt Like Art

One of my favorite meals of the year happened at Nong’s Khao Man Gai in Portland—a two Michelin star spot that served the best chicken and rice of my life. We went with our cousin (who we hadn’t seen in years), sipped tea and caught up a bit. The flavors were so simple but so thoughtful—exactly how I approach hair: intentional, elevated, never overdone.

3. Junior Hockey at Moda Center

Yes, I went to a hockey game—and loved it. Something about the energy of the crowd, the cold air in the arena, and being bundled up with family that felt nostalgic and grounding. It was chaotic and cozy in the best way.

4. Rain, Layers, and Minimal Luggage

I packed one bag for this trip—if you know me, that’s impressive. But I did it. Layers on layers, hoodies under vests, hiking boots and face masks… and I still felt cute. The cold, gloomy weather gave me life. I always feel most at peace in that kind of moody, misty landscape. It’s when my creativity resets.

The Soul Stuff

There’s something sacred about going back to a place from when you were a kid—and seeing it with new eyes. Hiking through forests, surrounded by people I love, laughing in the rain, making friends with my aunt’s Bengal cat and her ridiculously sweet dog… it reminded me how important it is to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with what feels real. I LOVE my job but, its just as important to step away—even for just a few days, to reset, relax, and find inspiration.

I left Washington with tangled hair, sore legs, and a full heart. And honestly, that’s the best kind of travel souvenir.

And to anyone feeling a little stuck: book the trip, take the hike, eat the chicken. Let the forest remind you who you are.
